Creamed Tomatoes

This is a recipe that probably not one person will try, but it is one of my favorites. I grew up eating this. It was a recipe that was handed down by my paternal grandmother, Nina Doubt. It was a favorite Sunday night supper.

2 1/2 cups of tomato juice (Blend canned tomatoes to make your juice)
Bring to a boil. Stir in the following mixture:
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup flour
1 cup milk
Sprinkle of salt.
Slowly pour into boiling tomato juice stirring constantly. Cook until thickened. We ate it over bread and butter on a plate. DELICIOUS!

Love creamed tomatoes!!! My granny used to make them all the time. I just made them but used fresh chopped up tomatoes and a lot less sugar. Awesome!

Thanks for the recipe, it looks good. I have a bag of fresh tomatoes at home and I am going to make this when I get off in the morning. I believe my grandmother made this using tomatoes she canned and we ate it on her home made dinner rolls.

I take care of an elderly lady, the age of 92. She told me that she would love to have a good country meal and proceeded to tell me about creamed tomatoes. She couldn't remember how to make them, so I looked up and used this recipe. She was so delighted, we sat at the table eating your wonderful creamed tomatoes over cornbread and talked about her childhood. Thank you for this recipe and the life that it brought back to her memories!

My Mom made this in the winter. She would open a quart jar of tomatoes that she had canned in the summer. Not sure of all ingredients, but I know there was sugar, milk, and chunks of almost stale homemade bread.

I'm also from WV (is this a WV thing?) I remember my paternal grandmother, Ruby Brown, made these for us when she would come visit. I can remember once, after I had grown to an adult & had my own car, I called her up & asked her to please make it for me. I told her I would come over for lunch one day if she did. She did just that & we had a very lovely time eating lunch & chatting. It made her happy to have her grown grand-daughter come over for a visit. Today, some 25+ yrs. later, I'm so glad I did that because it was one of the nicest memories I have of my late grandmother. I was thinking about it today when I found this recipe. I've always wanted to make it for my boys & now I can. Thanks for posting this. Here's to the memories! Lisa

Thank you! I have been looking for a creamed tomatoes recipe like my husband described his mother made years ago — thick, pink, and very sweet. I made this up and he says it’s just right. Yep, we are in WV.
